WASH

Our Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Committee works with a local contractor to provide rural schools with toilet blocks and hand washing stations.

Rotarians outside one of the new toilet blocks

We recently completed stewardship of a Rotary International Global Grant to build toilets, sanitary blocks and provide sanitary pads in six rural schools in the interior of Kilifi County. These schools formerly had no toilet facilities, with students having to walk far from the classrooms to find an area of bush where they could go. Understandably, this had a hugely negative impact not only on students’ health and hygiene, but also on the time they spent in class.

Now, thanks to a grant of equivalent USD $40,000, six schools have toilet facilities within the school grounds. Students spend more time in class, have hygienic washing facilities and haveĀ  also received WASH education.

Owing to the fantastic success of this project, in February 2018 we submitted another proposal to Rotary International for a Global Grant to continue building toilet blocks in more schools in the area. We are working in partnership with other Rotary Clubs and would be happy to hear from any clubs wishing to join us in this new initiative. Contact laurabrooks101@gmail.com
